Funny Bunny Toy Company - Hoppy Easter!

Hoppy Easter everyone!

While people who have never known the joy of having a pet rabbit may think of Easter as a day for Peter Cottontail to be hopping down the bunny trail, we know better. Bunnies are happiest binkying around the living room, hopping up and down on the bed or splayed out on the sofa relaxing or watching their favorite television show.

The House Rabbit Society has made great strides in protecting rabbits from becoming Easter impulse purchases that are discarded months later. It’s wonderful that shelters have stopped allowing bunnies to be adopted around Easter time. The Columbus House Rabbit Society’s "Make Mine Chocolate campaign" is a wonderful way to encourage people to reconsider buying a cute little bunny for their child for Easter and then dropping the bunny off at a shelter a few months later. Buying a chocolate rabbit is a much better idea for Easter. A chocolate rabbit doesn’t live for 7 – 12 years, so chocolate rabbits are a better choice for people who aren’t prepared to make a lifelong commitment to a rabbit. Not that bunny parents don’t enjoy chocolate rabbits too, and we know to keep them away from our real bunnies as chocolate is toxic to bunnies.

Great news for rabbits comes from the state of California. In late 2017, the governor signed a bill AB485 that will prohibit the sale of rabbits in pet stores (it also prohibits sales of dogs and cats). The bill will go into effect Jan. 1, 2019. Next year in California only rescues will be allowed to have animals at pet stores for adoption, no more sales. This will not only cut down on impulse buys, but on backyard breeders, and the overpopulation of rabbits and other pets. Hopefully other states will soon follow suit. You can write to your assembly person to get a bill in motion in your state.

Easter and April Fool’s Day are falling on the same day this year. That hasn’t happened since 1956, but it will happen again in 11 years. A fun April Fool’s Day joke is to take those tiny chocolate Easter eggs covered in fancy tin foil and peel off the foil. Set the chocolate eggs aside and replace the chocolate egg with a green or red grape and rewrap the grape in the colorful foil. Your friends and children won’t be able to tell the difference until they peel off the wrapper and you yell “April Fool”. They will be eggs you can share with your bunny once you remove the foil, so they serve a dual purpose for both holidays.
