Happy Holidays to you and your bunnies!!

I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving and are busy decking your halls with bows of carrot tops and other bunny safe decorations. Bows of holly are toxic to bunnies, but an untreated (no pesticides) pine tree is fine as long as your bunny doesn’t eat too much.

I'm sure your bunny is admiring your decorations as you set them out, but make sure anything non-edible or not bunny-safe is up high and out of reach.

There are so many pretty holiday decorations that are harmful to bunnies like tinsel and many ornaments and their hangers. Poinsettias aren't toxic, but they can give your bunny indigestion so I prefer to place mine on the porch where they are away from bunny's teeth and will brighten up the entrance way.

If you want to decorate the lower branches of your untreated tree, or decorate your bunny's pen, we have some adorable wooden bunny-safe ornaments in star, snowman, and tree shapes. They come in a pack of 3 or they are sold individually. Our cute ornaments are sure to add a festive touch to your bunny's pen and will provide safe chewing fun. The ornaments come with a raffia hanger.

I must have been a bunny in past life because, like a bunny, I love sweet things. Bunnies are known for loving bananas, dried cranberries, fresh pear, raisins, any sweet treat and they’ll even eat chocolate if given the opportunity.

Chocolate is deadly to rabbits so make sure to keep all of your chocolate treats up high, in a drawer, or even in the fridge. The same goes for all sweets like cookies. Bunnies love cookies, and cookies themselves may not be toxic, but eating cookies can cause digestive upset and even GI stasis which can be serious and even deadly if not treated immediately.

It's always a good idea to keep an extra close eye on bunny's litter box during the holidays and make sure everything’s normal. Even though we ask guests not to give any treats to our bunnies, when Fluffy stands up and begs she's hard to resist and may end up with a tummy upset because someone gave her something she shouldn't have.

It may be a good idea to check with your bunny's vet before the holidays to find out their holiday schedule and who is covering for emergencies and the telephone number and address just in case you need it.

I just love listening to Christmas Carols and decided to redo a classic song and make it for bunnies. This original song “Santa Baby” was recorded by Eartha Kitt in 1953, and was written by Joan Javits and Philip Springer.

Santa Bunny

Santa Bunny, slip some carrots under the tree for me
I’ve been an awfully good bun
Santa Bunny, so hurry down the chimney tonight

Santa Bunny, think of all the wires that I haven't chewed
I'm the best bunny, what else could you conclude
Next year I could be just as good
If you'll check off my Christmas list

Santa Bunny, I'd like a wooden toy, I'll hop for joy
I've been an angel all year long
Santa Bunny, so hurry down the chimney tonight

Santa Bunny, a cardboard box too, light blue
I'll wait up for you Santa Bunny
Santa Bunny, so hurry down the chimney tonight

Santa Bunny, I forgot to mention one little thing, to bring
A special untreated Christmas tree, just for me
Santa Bunny, hurry down the chimney tonight

This is a great time of year to have a professional photo of your bunny taken at your local pet store or at your local House Rabbit Society's Holiday Party. You can use the photos to make custom holiday cards, or ornaments. Who wouldn't love to receive a card with your beautiful bunny on the front?

One way to keep your bunny safe from holiday decor is to put a baby gate or ex-pen around the tree or across the doorway to your living room and keep all your decorations in that one room.

You wouldn't want your bunny to feel like they are being cheated out of all the holiday goodies, so I’m including a recipe for a Bunny Holiday Tree Salad.

Bunny Holiday Tree Salad

(Serves 2)

Ingredients:

Curly Parsley – remove curly leaf cluster and reserve stems
6 - Dried Cranberries or 6 Golden Raisins
1” slice of carrot diced into tiny ¼” x ¼” cubes
¼” slice of fresh banana, carrot, or strawberry cut into star shape

Directions:

Form curly parsley leaf clusters into a tree shape (approx. 4" base x 6" side triangle)
The parsley will form the tree branches and needles.
Make rows of "ornaments" on your Bunny Holiday Tree Salad with an assortment of diced carrots, and dried cranberries and/or raisins,
Place the carrot or banana star on top.

Bun Appétit!!

We may need to take special precautions when decorating our homes, but it is opportunity to enjoy our fur babies and keep them safe by coming up with creative ways to decorate and enjoy the season.

Rather than hanging toxic mistletoe, tie up little bunches of pine. You could even make little bunches of "mistletoe" for your bunny with springs of parsley tied with raffia or sisal twine.

Instead of using dangerous metallic wrapping paper, or wrapping paper with toxic dyes, try making your own festive wrapping paper. Get a roll of plain brown or white Kraft paper and use soy ink and rubber stamps to decorate your own bunny safe wrapping paper. You can also substitute raffia or sisal twine in place of dangerous ribbon. Ribbon is very hazardous to bunnies, kitties, dogs or any pet that swallows it. It can get twisted around their intestines and require surgery. That is no fun over the holidays or any time.

Speaking of sisal rope, Funny Bunny Toy Company is now using sisal rope on our rope toys rather than the cotton rope we've used for years. The cotton rope was very safe but the manufacturer went out of business and all the other cotton ropes available are twisted cotton and not safe for bunnies. We hope your bunny will continue to enjoy our toys with our change in rope.

We've been getting requests for a new hanging toy so we made one with a sisal rope hanger. Perfect for the holidays and all year long, we created our Hanging Stars & Willow Balls. Our Hanging Stars & Willow Balls are 5-3/8" long, minus the sisal hanger, and made with 2-7/8" stars and 4cm willow balls on a solid ¾" thick hardwood dowel.
